From a broader study grounded in the Socioepistemological Theory that utilizes the Ethnographic method to identify and characterize the development of uses of trigonometric notions in Engineering, we present the results from three particular objectives and their respective method: (1) the identification of the concepts for Reality, Model, Mathematical Modelling and Modelling Cycles, as the conceptual foundation to study Mathematical Modelling in Engineering; (2) the documentation, through fieldwork in a professionalizing course, of the Mathematical Modelling strategy that allows a group of students and their professor to approach problem-situations close to their professional tasks; and (3) the configuration of a modeling stance from in training engineer tasks that takes into account the theoretical framework, the engineering scenario and the conceptual foundation. We concluded that Mathematical Modelling is a practice in which engineers use of both mathematical and disciplinary knowledge, both of which are equally important, and that the characterization based on the chosen conceptual terms applies to any professionalizing course and could even be extended to other formative moments that include courses with theory and laboratories.
